Being Brave

The Women’s Resource Center and APSC co-presented Being Brave, a panel discussion on the Native American mascot debate, which took place on Tuesday, November 19, at 6:30 PM in Gorgas 205. The panel included Dr. George Daniels and was moderated by Dr. Andrew Billings.

USA Today’s Christine Brennan Speaks

Award winning sports columnist, best-selling author, and television commentator Christine Brennan spoke to students, faculty, and the outside public on the topic of “Sports in the 21st Century: Diversity at the Starting Line” on October 25. More information about the event can be found here.

FOX Sports’ Larry McReynolds Speaks

Former NASCAR crew chief and current racing analyst Larry McReynolds spoke to students in an event on Thursday, October 17.

 

APSC Hosts Bryant Sports Leadership Institute

Local students from area city and county high schools participated in a summer event, the Bryant Sports Leadership Institute, to promote educational and career opportunities in sports-related fields. Students participated in journalism and broadcasting workshops and heard from top speakers in the field, including CBS Sports’ Bruce Feldman, Sports Illustrated Senior Writer Lars Anderson, and Football Bowl Association Executive Director Wright Waters.

TCF Students Recognized by College Sports Media Awards

Three TCF Undergraduates won honors from the College Sports Media Awards, all in the category of “Student Special Feature.”  The joint effort from Chad Haynie and Lee Smith was a finalist (top 5) with their entry about Alabama Softball and the tornado.  Honorable mention was also given to Rebecca Cade (for a feature on Alabama’s rowing tuba player) and Chad Haynie (“U Are Here: Haylie McCleney”).  Congrats to these students for their outstanding work!

APSC Holds Inaugural Symposium

The University of Alabama Program in Sports Communication held its inaugural Academic Symposium on Wednesday, March 20 at the Gorgas Library. Over 150 students and faculty presented their work and/or attended the Symposium.  ESPN’s Mike Hill provided a guest lecture. The conference program was quite robust  with Dr. Lance Kinney serving as Symposium Director.

 

 

ESPN’s Rece Davis Speaks to UA Students, Faculty, and Public

ESPN’s host and anchor and University of Alabama alum Rece Davis spoke on the UA campus on Thursday, January 31 at 11:00 at the Ferguson Student Center Theater. The SportsCenter anchor and host of “College Football Live” and “College GameDay” offered a short lecture and answered many audience questions.
